HIPAA Privacy Rule

Ohio Valley Nurses makes it our business to keep abreast of new laws that have an impact on the nursing industry. The term "Privacy Rule" is often preceded by "HIPAA", an acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued the Privacy Rule in December 2000 to carry out HIPAA's mandate that HHS establish Federal standards for safeguarding the privacy of individually identifiable negative effects on health care, and relieve unintended administrative burdens. HHS amended the Privacy Rule on August 14, 2002. Most covered entities must comply with the Privacy Rule by April 14, 2003. Small health plans have an extra year, until April 14, 2004, to comply. Entities that become covered entities after these dates must be in compliance with the Privacy Rule at such time that they become covered. Key points to the Privacy Rule are as follows: Additional resources on the final HIPAA Privacy rule can be found at:

Ohio Statehood Postage Stamp

Ohio Valley Nurses is proud to be part of a geographic area of the United States that is quite unique in nature. Their is much history in this part of the region. The U.S. Postal Service issued the Ohio Statehood stamp on March 1, 2003 during the Ohio bicentennial kick-off celebration. Comprised of land ceded to the United States after the Revolutionary War, the Northwest Territory included present-day Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. In 1787 Congress enacted a plan to organize and govern this large area. The following year its first permanent settlement was established in Marietta, Ohio. On February 19, 1803, President Thomas Jefferson approved Ohio's constitution, and on March 1, 1803, Ohio became the first state carved from the territory and the 17th admitted to the Union. The Ohio Statehood stamp features a color photograph taken by photographer Ian Adams. Taken near Marietta, Ohio, the photograph depicts a country lane and barn located on the edge of Wayne National Forest in Washington County
