April 15th is the dreaded day for many, and is approaching quickly. It is the deadline to file your income taxes.

When it comes to filing your taxes a little planning and organization throughout the year can save a lot of time and grief. It may even result in a refund check that you were not expecting.

Following is a list of potential tax deductions of nurses:

*Nursing Licenses

*Malpractice insurance

*Union dues and expenses

*Professional organization dues and professional journals

*Cost of education required for your job

*Cost of education to upgrade skills required for your job

*Protective clothing such as safety shoes, glasses, and special clothing

*Tools, equipment, and supplies for your job

*Job search expenses

*Travel, transportation, meals, and lodging expenses necessary for finding new employment

*Moving expenses when necessary for business reasons

*Cost of uniforms, special clothing, and shoes required for the job

*Upkeep expenses (including laundry, cleaning) for uniforms and work clothing

*Child or dependent care (partially deductible)

*Political contributions

*Home telephone bill expenses related to your job

*Donations to non-profit charities

*Mortgage interest

*Closing cost when selling a home and moving, for business related reasons

*Tax return preparation fees from the previous year.

It is not to late to start getting organized for 2004. Purchase an expandable folder and label each folder......W2, pay stubs, business expenses, home expenses, and other important documents. Sort as you go. Keep everything organized, it will make tax preparation a breeze.

If April 15th is just tooooooooo close, you can file an extension with the IRS and gain some time to prepare your tax return.
